VMI Shirley House Master Plan
The Shirley House property consists of a two-story, brick residence dating from 1875, a one-story concrete block addition constructed in 1992 and three wooden outbuildings on 2.7 acres. The property was purchased by Virginia Military Institute in 2001 and has since been incorporated into the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park.
Commonwealth Architects developed a master plan for the property that included the evaluation of both the site and buildings in terms of condition, limitations and areas in need of improvements. Site considerations included parking, landscape, view sheds, and signage. As part of the investigation, civil engineering and landscape architectural services were coordinated with VDOT and the Town of New Market.
