Foundry Park Bridge

Seeking to provide improved access to Brown's Island, Commonwealth Architects designed a pedestrian bridge at Foundry Park in downtown Richmond, Virginia. Located at the base of Gamble's Hill at 5th and Tredegar Streets, and in between the Tredegar National Civil War Museum and the new MeadWestvaco Headquarters, the new bridge crosses the Haxall Canal, connecting the proposed Foundry Park development to Brown's Island and the James River.

Because of the project's proximity to the historic brick and stone Tredegar National Civil War Museum and the new, contemporary MeadWestvaco Building, sensitivity was applied in developing the new bridge in a way that is contextual and yet transitional (between historic and contemporary) in scale, mass, form, and material selection. The chosen bridge was a simple, yet elegant archway structure with a galvanized finish.
