Portsmouth Naval Hospital

Commonwealth Architects served as a Special Independent Observer to assist with the exterior rehabilitation of Building 1 at the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. The building, originally constructed in 1830, is primarily a combination of granite masonry, historic stucco cladding and recent EIFS cladding. Infiltration of moisture and water into the building over time has caused the failure of some of the primary building enclosure systems and created the necessity for the exterior rehabilitation. The initial areas of focus involved existing window removal and reinstallation, demolition of existing covering/cladding systems, damproofing, installation of stone panels, stucco sounding and repair, sandstone and granite repair/replacement, masonry repointing, and application of new exterior coating.
