Chippokes Plantation and State Park

Chippokes Plantation lies on the south side of the James River, slightly downstream and across the river from Jamestown. Consisting of 1403 acres, many of the fields are tended to by local area farmers, producing cotton, corn, soybeans and peanuts. With a variety of eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth century structures scattered throughout the acreage, Commonwealth Architects was contracted to stabilize, weatherproof and renovate eighteen of these structures, which included various historic buildings ranging from tenant houses, slave quarters and the River House to a dairy barn, corn crib and carriage house.
