VCU W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. Building Earns LEED-NC Silver Certification

April 23, 2010

Commonwealth Architects is proud to announce that the W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. Building at Virginia Commonwealth University has received LEED-NC Silver Certification by the United States Green Building Council.

Designed by Commonwealth Architects, the 56,000 square-foot addition to VCU's School of Dentistry was completed in June 2009 and expands the clinical, teaching and research facilities of Virginia's only dental school.

In order to meet the USGBC's guidelines, Commonwealth Architects utilized a number of sustainable design strategies, including energy efficient mechanical systems, water-saving plumbing fixtures, interior finishes with low or no volatile organic compounds, and use of materials with a high percentage of recycled content. In addition, over 75% of construction waste was recycled rather than being sent to a landfill.

Developed by the USGBC, LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
