Movieland and Miller & Rhoads Projects Receive AIA Richmond Awards

April 19, 2010

The Richmond Chapter of the American Institute of Architects honored the best new work by its members on April 16, and Commonwealth Architects took home two Merit Awards for Design Excellence. Movieland at Boulevard Square and the Miller & Rhoads Mixed-Use Project both received awards at the 2010 Honors and Awards Ceremony held at The VCU Brandcenter.

Commonwealth Architects' rehabilitation of the former Miller & Rhoads Department Store into a Hilton Garden Inn and Miller& Rhoads Residences breathed new life into a neglected retail structure creating a vibrant mixed-use development for dining, shopping and living in downtown Richmond. The project includes 133 residential units, a 250 room hotel, indoor pool, fitness centers, ballroom, covered entry plaza, 234 car parking garage, outdoor terraces, dining room, bar, restaurant and common areas for public functions. This adaptive reuse project has helped fuel the continued rehabilitation and revitalization of the commercial heart of downtown Richmond.

Each year, AIA Richmond sponsors design awards to celebrate the best of the Richmond area's newest architecture, to recognize achievement in a broad range of architectural work by licensed architects as well as interns, to recognize the special contributions to the built environment by individuals outside of the profession and to inform the public of the breadth and value of the architectural practice.
