Commonwealth Architects' Winning Stocking Design Benefits Southside Child Development Center

December 16, 2009

Commonwealth Architects won the Annual IIDA/Knoll Stocking Design Competition held on December 10. This year's proceeds from the competition will deck the halls and brighten the holidays for the children at Southside Child Development Center in Richmond.

A check for $1,000 was donated to the center in Commonwealth Architects' name after stockings were judged at the annual holiday party hosted by the Virginia/West Virginia Chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). Santa delivered toys collected by chapter members to the children at Southside Child Development Center at a party on December 15. Stockings from the competition are also presented to the center for use as holiday decorations and given to children's families.

"We are so honored to have been chosen again this year. We know with the tough economic times that this sacrifice came with a lot of love. We were so taken aback at the large donation of $1,000. You have blessed SCDC so very much and this helps us to care for our children and take a little pressure off of the parents," said Yvonne Hicks of SCDC.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Commonwealth Architects has won the stocking competition. IIDA chapter board member, Kimberly Powell, CID, LEED AP, helped organize the effort as event chairperson. She and Virginia W. Johnston, CID, created the winning stocking design that included the ever-popular Grinch. Each year IIDA has supported Southside Development Center as the recipient of the stocking design donation.

Southside Child Development Center is committed to providing quality and affordable childcare services and preschool education for children of working parents.
