Commonwealth Architects Receives Honor for Bow-Tie Cinema's Movieland

November 17, 2009

Commonwealth Architects was recently honored with an Award of Merit given by the Virginia Downtown Development Association (VDDA) for the rehabilitation of Bow-Tie Cinema's Movieland at Boulevard Square. The 17-theater complex was recognized as an exemplary project in the category of Building Development and Improvements.

Commonwealth Architects' transformation of the 19th century former locomotive manufacturing warehouse into a cinema complex has made a successful impact on the Boulevard Business District. The project features comfortable seating, plenty of free parking and a café. In addition, the site's unique rail history was incorporated into the design of the building and of the landscape. The project has brought first-run movies back to the city, while also honoring the City of Richmond's history and architectural heritage.

The award was presented to Commonwealth Architects at VDDA's Annual Conference and Awards Dinner on October 29 and was accepted by Robert C. Burns, AIA, LEED AP (pictured, above), the firm's Director of Historic Architecture.

VDDA Awards of Excellence recognize and encourage excellence in downtown revitalization throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Two levels of awards are presented to showcase the achievements of organizations, individuals and government in meeting the challenges of downtown management and development.
