Commonwealth Architects will sponsor a cleanup of Great Shiplock Park as part of its 10th anniversary celebration on Saturday, June 13. The public is encouraged to join the Richmond architecture firm in the cleanup of one of the city's historic parks.
Armed with trash bags and a belief that clean parks lead to a healthier river and community, Commonwealth Architects will comb the park's shoreline and nature trails to pick up trash and recyclables. They will pull weeds and repaint peeling fixtures.
"Commonwealth Architects is focused on the rebuilding of communities throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Great Shiplock Park is located within blocks of our office. For our 10th anniversary, we wanted to give back to our own neighborhood. We want to help maintain this valuable natural resource within our city. It's a way of contributing to the city and of contributing to a greener, more sustainable environment," said principal Robert Mills.
A unique wilderness area within the heart of the city, Great Shiplock Park offers river access to fishermen and expansive views of the James River to visitors. Built in the 1850s, it features a working lock that used to connect the James with the Richmond Dock as part of the Kanawha Canal system.
The goal of the cleanup: to contribute to a cleaner park, a healthier river, sustainable populations of fish and a restored resource for visitors.
Commonwealth Architects Cleanup Day at Great Shiplock Park is part of a regional James River Cleanup, "Cleaning Up the Source," sponsored by the James River Advisory Council on the same day. This is a collective effort to be good stewards of the environment in River City's parks.
From recycling existing buildings to the rejuvenation of a forgotten city park, Commonwealth Architects believes in contributing to a sustainable world through a commitment to rebuilding communities.
Commonwealth Architects celebrates 10 years of rebuilding community. We are a full service Architecture, Historic Architecture, Interior Design, Planning, Landscape Architecture, 3D Visualization, and Urban Design firm.
Participants should bring work gloves and insect repellent and wear closed-toe shoes.
